I’m
Learning To Accept Myself
By
Crystal Eddlemon
The
need for acceptance by others is the one thing that every person has in common.
I have spent many years trying to earn the acceptance of others only to find
rejection and disappointment. Often times in the process of trying to earn
acceptance, I lost my own self-acceptance.
I struggled in nearly every aspect of my life due to lack of acceptance.
Even
as children we yearn for our parents acceptance. We look to them for approval
and reassurance also. Acceptance maintains its importance throughout our
lifetime. In adolescence it can cause us to participate in dangerous
behaviors to feel that we belong. This is a need that never subsides.
We
can spend a lifetime trying to fill this need from the outside. This is like
trying to store water in a container that has holes. Yes, it keeps us busy, but
eventually we become exhausted and feel defeated. It is important to remember, that Jesus
accepts and loves us unconditionally. Before He paid the ultimate price for our
sins, He knew our lives from beginning to end. He knew every good and bad thing
each one of us has and will ever do. Yet, He still loved us enough to sacrifice
Himself in our place.
I
now know that acceptance doesn’t need to be earned. It is a gift, and I accept
myself for who I am. Even though I have many imperfections; despite all
my mistakes; I accept myself, and I accept His wonderful gifts. He
commands us to: "Love our neighbor as we love ourselves." He also
tells us that we must give to receive. I believe this applies to acceptance
also.
Your
love is more precious than diamonds or gold,
it
can not be bought nor can it be sold.
It
does not change from day to day,
your
love is here to stay.
In
times that I feel most alone,
tis'
then I look and see the love brightly shone.
Its
in the little things we take for granted,
the
most beautiful wonders in which your seed were planted.
Its
in every living creature,
your
example being the ultimate teacher.
Looking
at the stars and moon you sat in place,
feeling
the warmth of the sun shining upon my face.
Listening
to the birds singing their song,
hearing
your voice helps me to stay strong.
Keeping
your promise bound in my heart,
knowing
your love will never part.
Giving
comfort in times of sorrow,
a
hope for tomorrow.
Thank
you for giving your love that never ends,
thanks
also for my family and friends.
