"Dear diary, today is my
birthday," begins the story. "This afternoon Johannes put the third
and final coat of golden varnish on me and hung me up to dry. Already he is
planning my first concert."
Joni and Friends Southern
Oregon is thrilled to have “The Golden Violin” return to the
Rogue Valley.
Those of us who were at “The
Golden Violin” concert two years ago will attest to the rich and
soaring music that emanates from the vibrating strings under the masterful
guidance of violinist Calvin Dyck. From the age of five, Calvin showed an
aptitude for music and soon discovered his love for performing and bringing
enjoyment to others. He studied at Biola University and USC where, in 1991, he received his
Doctorate of Musical Arts in Violin Performance. He has performed his interactive show, “The
Golden Violin” around the world. His
eclectic career has taken him to surprising places from Whitehorse in northern
Canada to Havana, Kiev, Paris and Los Angeles.
Currently Calvin is concertmaster for the Vancouver Island Symphony and
the director of the Abbotsford Youth Orchestra and co-director of the Canada
West Chamber Orchestra. He also plays
with the Vancouver Opera and the Vancouver Symphony.
This last “perfect violin”
made by the Dutch maker Johannes Cuypers in 1807 has
a magnificent story to tell and now it goes on tour with "Moscow to Madrid – the
continuing adventures of the Golden Violin". Calvin and renowned pianist Betty Suderman present a multi-media, multi-dimensional
experience with exceptional music accompanied by visual images, colorful
costumes and hats. “The Golden Violin” reveals its remarkable life in excerpts from
its very own diary chronicling tales of owners, concerts, revolution, war,
peace and beauty on a musical journey from Holland to Russia, France and
eventually Spain, meeting famous composers and violinists along the way.
This concert benefits Joni and Friends Southern Oregon, meeting physical, emotional and spiritual needs of people affected by disability.
