Lure of the Big Catch: A Fisherman’s Reflections on the Things That Matter, By H. Norman Wright, Paintings by Scott Kennedy

Although this will probably appeal to men more than women, I thoroughly enjoyed every page and recommend it whether you’re a fishing enthusiast or not. True stories along with numerous quotes, Scripture verses, and paintings fill the pages. The author tells of the joy of hooking a “keeper,” the one you don’t throw back, and then reminds the reader that all of God’s children are keepers. He’s also encountered dangers such as, bears, snakes, and bees while fishing and compares them to the temptations you should watch out for in life.

In each section, he gently connects the story he’s telling with Scripture. You never feel he is preaching at you, only sharing what he has learned, just as he would share the location of a favorite fishin’ hole with a friend.

Kennedy’s beautiful paintings and sketches of mountain lakes and streams, and rivers across the United States add to the stories. They make me long for the mountains and streams of Idaho and Montana. Many of the pictures show fathers and sons fishing together.

Spa Treatments for Your Body and Soul: Tranquil Moments to Refresh Your Spirit, By Janie Seltzer

© 2008, Harvest House, 64 pages, $9.99

I smiled from the time I opened this little book until I reached the last page. Filled with charming photos of flowers, fountains, and shells in soft shades of green, cream, and brown, this lovely book is a feast to the eyes as well as a delight to the spirit. The author asks the question, “How do we take care of ourselves?” Then she says even though a trip to a spa might be delightful, its calming, soothing effects will not last long if our spirit isn’t at peace. To be truly refreshed we need a close personal relationship with God.

Scriptures, thought provoking statements, and ways to draw closer to God are combined with ideas to help you get a good night’s sleep and how to inexpensively add beauty to your home. Two of the eight short chapters are titled, “Enjoy Hearing” and “Be Refreshed.”
