Changes That Need To Be Made

By Willa Johnson

We’ve probably heard the word “change” more this past year than ever before due to the political arena. When things are off track, changes do need to be made. Now, in America the whole issue of race and gender has entered into the political realm for the first time. Consequently, there will be an historical change whichever candidate wins.

In the 1920s, there was a song made famous by entertainers of the day that talked about changes. It mentions a change in the weather; a change in the sea; (my) walk, talk and name will be different; and then promises that “Nothin’ about me gonna be the same” because “I’m gonna change the way I’m livin.”

That’s what I want to dwell on…changing our way of living. If everyone who professes to be a Christian would truly follow the teachings of Christ, how much better this world would be. It’s true that none of us is perfect, nor will we ever be in this life. That doesn’t mean that we shouldn’t strive to imitate Christ. In fact, the Bible instructs us to do just that. I heard a sermon wherein we were reminded of how Christ healed and forgave but then instructed the recipients of the blessings to “Go and sin no more.” Once we repent of our sins and accept Christ as our Savior we are expected to turn our life around and not continue on the path to destruction.

The Apostle Peter gave clear instructions about the dangers of falling back to the ways of the world when he wrote in II Peter 2:21: “For it had been better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than, after they have known it, to turn from the holy commandment delivered unto them.”

A Christian who continues in the old sins needs to do as the song says and change his/her way of living so that “Nothin’ about me gonna be the same. Now, wouldn’t that be a wonderful change?
