The Holy Spirit – Our Guide

Recently while walking down the street I noticed an elderly couple in front of me. The husband clutched the elbow of his wife and helped to steady her as they continued on their way.

This incident illustrates to me the work of the Holy Spirit in our lives. The Greek word for Holy Spirit is Parakletos which means, “one called along side” or “to the side of,” and also as the Comforter.

1)  The Holy Spirit directs our walk.  One may ask how does the Holy Spirit direct our walk?

He bears witness.

We walk by faith and not sight. In I Corinthians 1:22 states: Who has also sealed us, and given the earnest of the Spirit in our hearts.

He gives us Freedom.

In Romans 8:15-16 the Bible states we have not received a spirit of bondage to fear but the spirit of adoption, giving us the right to call God “Abba, Father.” He bears witness to us also that we are the children of God. Galatians 4:6-7 assures us that we are sons and heirs of Christ.

The Holy Spirit helps us direct our walk in love.

In I John 1:7 it tells us if we walk in the light of God’s love we will have fellowship with one another and be cleansed from all sins. In Romans 8:14 we are told that as many as are led by the Spirit of God are the sons of God.

We are enlightened by the Holy Spirit.

In I Corinthians 2:9-10 it states: …Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him. But God has revealed them unto us by his Spirit…

2)  The Holy Spirit is our Comforter.  Jesus told the disciples that He had to go away but that He would send the Paraklete (Comforter/Teacher).

As our Teacher.

In John 14:26 we are told that the Comforter, which is the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send…shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance… In Acts 1:8 the disciples were told they would receive the power needed to proclaim the gospel by the infilling of the Holy Spirit in their lives.

As a comfort in our daily lives.

When our grandson died shortly after his birth, I was overcome with grief but as I called on God, I felt the comfort that only the Holy Spirit can give. In John 14:19 Jesus tells the disciples that He will not leave them comfortless, but will send the Holy Spirit to them.

As I searched for comfort and peace from the Lord during that difficult time, John 14:27 gave me assurance. Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you….

Like the elderly gentleman clung to his wife helping her, the Holy Spirit is there beside us guiding and comforting us, God’s children.
